Troop 709 was formed in September 1985 by Scoutmaster Bill Marsden. The
troop began with six boys -- graduates of Cub
Scout Pack 709. By the end of the first three months, it had grown to 12 Scouts. Troop 709 was
first sponsored by the PTA's of Casita and Grapevine Elementary Schools. In 1988,
the sponsor was changed to the Vista United Methodist Men. Currently, the
sponsoring organization is the
United Methodist Church of Vista.
In
October 1989, Troop 709 gained its second Scoutmaster in
Art Carpenter.
Mr. Carpenter was Scoutmaster until December 2005. The troop's third
Scoutmaster was
Dave Hendron
beginning in January 2006. Our
fourth Scoutmaster,
Lance Fisher, took over in January 2009.
Troop
709 has continued to build traditions and has gained a reputation as one of the
highest
quality troops in San Diego North County. Troop 709 has been a Quality Unit
every year of its
existence and is one of the largest troops in the Tri-City area with nearly
50 boys and 20
adult leaders. Troop 709 is a troop that follows and believes in the Boy Scout program
for youth. It belongs to the boys, is run by the boys,
and it represents the excellence of the youth of America and our community.
Troop 709 expects from each Scout: A belief in the Scout Oath or Promise
and the Scout Law, a Positive Attitude, a Willingness
to Serve others, Advancement along the Trail to Eagle, and a Desire to Continue the Excellence
of Troop 709.
Troop 709 has a history of
excellence in leadership. Scoutmaster Art Carpenter was the San
Diego-Imperial Council Scoutmaster of the Year for 2006. In 2008,
Scoutmaster Dave Hendron was also recognized as the Scoutmaster of the
Year. Troop 709 is the only troop in the San Diego - Imperial Council to
be recognized with this honor twice!
